MY OBSERVATORY

MY OBSERVATORY

^ Old logo ............ v New logo

BAND NAME: My Observatory
GENRE: Experimental / Field Recordings / Ambient
(+ first 3 releases have a lot of Harsh Noise Wall)
STATUS: Active

Formed in April 2019.

Currently, all tracks are instrumental.

The idea of this project is to portray a middle-ground between nature and civilization -- structures like old bridges that are man-made but reside outside of any cities or towns; the side of the road where plants grow, but man-made debris is also strewn about; a solitary hilltop at night where one can see city lights far off in the distance; even just watching things happen outside while sitting in your house; the atmosphere of things like this, is what I want to portray with this project. Without nature, one only gets the corrupted ways of mankind, lacking the beauty that lies outside of man's sinful, close-minded ways. However, without civilization, one misses the higher, divine calling written in the hearts of mankind, thus lacking direction and higher purpose. Many of Jesus' teachings were aimed at people who lived in civilized society, but Jesus also spent a lot of time in the wilderness. In ancient Israel, there were prophets who spoke in the cities, but there were also loners living in the desert, teaching whoever was interested in listening to them. I want to portray similar ideas through this project, both because I just find it interesting on an artistic/aesthetic level, and also because I see far too many people who make idols of nature or civilization in their lives (I was VERY guilty of this in the old days...) and I want to reach out to them (being careful, of course, not to inadvertently make another idol of the artistic ideas I'm presenting here, merely replacing one idol with another, but rather using these ideas as a tool to reflect the teachings of the Holy Trinity.)

Lineup:
Nocturnal Iridescence - Programming, Field Recordings

Discography:

Storm Demo (demo)

2 May, 2019, Independent, Bandcamp
24 August, 2019, Skull Hill Recordings, Bandcamp, link expired

Also stream on YouTube (OFFICIAL)

When Skull Hill picked up the release, I kept the page on the independent version, but disabled all the audio. When Skull Hill closed, I put the audio back (after about a year of forgetting, lol). Note that at the very beginning of 2023, Skull Hill Recordings rebranded to Skull Hill Publishing.

By the way, if you're wondering, the small text on the artwork doesn't actually say anything -- it's just unicode symbols and numbers that I arranged for artistic effect.

1) Low-Pressure System 9:20
2) Observing a Storm Near the River 9:57
3) Working Inside the Facility 6:03

Blue Noise (album, 11 April, 2021, Independent)
Format: Digital / Bandcamp
Stream / Download (OFFICIAL)

The tiny blue text underneath the words "BLUE NOISE" is the entirety of Genesis 1, KJV.

1) Discovering New Marine Life 15:00
2) Transmission 3:04
3) Flooded Cave in the Subantarctic 7:02
4) Rain in the Cold Mountains 9:26
5) Outro 00:48

Blistering Freezing Ocean Winter (album, 23 July, 2022, Independent)
Format: Digital / Bandcamp
Stream / Download (OFFICIAL)

The same song in two different versions. The first one is mixed/mastered to be noise-oriented, while the second one is mixed/mastered to be oriented toward ambience and field recordings.

Made both as an offering to God, and as a tribute to Frostnoise, a project that has inspired and helped me a lot. The cover art (including "logo") is based on that project's art style.

1) (Noise Version) Blistering Freezing Ocean Winter 45:00
2) (Ambient Version) Blistering Freezing Ocean Winter 45:00

2024 Demo (16 May, 2024, Independent)

First demo under the new style + with the new logo. Both songs are instrumental.

1) Storm Monitoring 5:59
2) Printing Out the Results 1:00

Untitled 2025 (demo, 8 April, 2025, Independent)

Not a single second of this was written by me. It was all written by God. There are still inevitable flaws in the music, because it was performed by a human. (For instance, I think the mixing on track 1 could have been better.) But the ideas themselves were given by God (Father; Son; Holy Spirit).

Two years after taking the cover photo, I now see it was also God's idea to render it in blue. At the time I was frustrated that the camera did that. I now understand, in 2025, that it was a sign I was supposed to use the photo for this release. (Of course it was modified a bit for artwork purposes. God helped with this, too.)

Nature samples were adapted from freesound.org

1) Some of the Humans Found Ethereal Calm in the Solitude
6:16, instrumental

2) All Manner of Human Invention Was First Perceived by God
5:53, instrumental
The sample here is "Chuva no fim de tarde | Late afternoon rain" by jose.viana, Attribution 4.0

Dreaming Again of the World's Unattainable Future (EP, 23 April, 2025, Independent)
Format: Digital / Bandcamp
Stream / Download (OFFICIAL)

Bible verses relevant to the idea behind each track:
Track 1: Genesis 28:11-12
Track 2: 1 Corinthians 3:18-19
Track 3: Ephesians 5:8

The turn of the millennium was supposed to be so different. Instead of moving forward, we're moving backward in almost every way. This is no longer of primary concern to me, as I realize most things on earth are temporary, and the "greatness" of earthly things is tiny compared to the vast, indescribable glory that awaits us in heaven. Still, I'd be lying if I said I didn't hold some resentment toward the world for allowing me to base my future plans on blatant lies.

Originally, track 3 was meant to be based around the idea of relaxing in a darkened room, but very clearly, God wanted it to be a song warning against "darkness" in an allegorical sense. I listened.

1) Background Sounds of the Facility 4:05
2) The Data Stream 3:03
3) In Darkness, the Observation Deck 4:00

Give Me Rest, and Guide My Steps, O Lord (EP, 7 May, 2025, Independent)
Format: Digital / Bandcamp
Stream / Download (OFFICIAL)

Also stream on YouTube (OFFICIAL)

One day I sat by the side of a highway and recorded a few minutes of cars passing by. Made this out of it. God guided/composed everything, I just played it (imperfectly).

God told me what to make for the cover art. I used stock photos from UNSPLASH to achieve it:
- "A view of a city at night from a hill", Cyan Chen @xiych777
- "calm boy of water", Paula Sotomayor @sotomayorpau

1) Give Me Rest, and Guide My Steps, O Lord 21:13
