THORNS + COMPOST

BAND NAME: Thorns + Compost (aka Thorns and Compost, etc)
GENRE: Harsh Noise Wall / HNW (early), Experimental / Noise / Blacknoise / Field Recordings (now)
STATUS: Active

Formed in April 2020.

"Thematically focused on portraying Christianity through the less 'pleasant' aspects of nature. It's easy to talk about our Lord when looking at a mountain, or a lush forest, a powerful bird flying... but the world God created also has very 'mundane' things like thorny plants, underbrush, bugs, fallen trees, moss, and so on. All of this is God's creation as well, and although it may not inspire us artistically nearly as often as other things, they are all equally 'good' on a conceptual level, as mountains or lush forests."

Split with Armageddon.ΑΩ777

The T+C song mixes harsh noise with nature samples.
The ΑΩ777 song mixes harsh noise with splittercore/extratone.

I'm pretty sure the ΑΩ777 song is the first Christian splittercore and/or extratone ever created.

I felt a conviction from God to create "something vaguely like this". I began creating it as a fairly standard harsh noise wall / HNW song, with a slight hint of ambient. I followed God's instructions, and it turned into a blacknoise song. Everything about this, even the placement of the logo on the artwork, was directed by God. I just [imperfectly] recreated it. The vocals were done in one take. I messed up a few times, but thankfully it's not obvious. Whisper-screaming for 19 straight minutes was very exhausting to do! I got very lightheaded and thought I might pass out a couple times, but God gave me reassurance to keep going and, while I did doubt a few times, I was okay.

The idea was for the vocals to be a "texture" / "additional instrument" in the music, not meant to be listened to for words. However, there were lyrics. God told me that, well, most of us who listen to music like this are very stressed out, and the vocals should be a way for you to vent the stress and negativity on your mind. Whatever your individual problems are in life. Listen to this and scream out your worries in your mind. However, for those who are curious, or who need to know for theological reasons, the basic idea of the song is this: using a blizzard as a metaphor, or literary device, to talk about God and general Christocentric theology. Ideas talked about in the song include monotheism; trinitarianism; the vanity / futility of pantheism; heaven and hell; God's wrath; God's promise of mercy to the repentant; the vanity of "living for the world"; and probably a few more things I'm forgetting right now.

I Will Praise You in This Chaos (single/EP, 31 August, 2025, Independent)

The cover is a photo of plants with powdery mildew on them. The photo represents two things:
1) the beauty of creation, suffering under the trials of the world
2) the fact that even things like powdery mildew, which only appear to cause suffering, have a divine purpose

I wanted to lower the volume of the crickets, but God told me to keep it as-is. This represents the continuation of order, and of praise, in God's plan, despite struggles -- the crickets continue to sing according to the natural order ordained by God, which ultimately overpowers hardship. The end is sung 9 times. The first 3 are directed to God the Father. The second 3 are directed to God the Son. The last 3 are directed to God the Holy Spirit. As usual, all this was done according to God's order. And as usual, please remember that I'm a human being with flaws and limited abilities, and thus this work is not a *perfect* recreation of God's will.

The sections of lyrics that begin with " † " are Bible verses. The sections without that symbol are original lyrics for the song.

1) I Will Praise You in This Chaos
12:36, lyrics:
† And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."
(Luke 9:58)

† Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
(Psalm 41:9)

† You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.
(Luke 21:16)

Wretch that I am. Father... my soul withers under the trials of life. My body that I hate, it works against me. Exhausted and failing to work, I slowly die from depression. My emotions kill me, the stress never-ending. I am betrayed on all sides, and I walk the embittered path of man alone. Love fades from me; apathy chills my dead heart. Wickedness surrounds me on all sides and I am powerless to stop it. How I yearn to crush all of it in my fist, but I can rarely so much as lift a finger. There is love but not for me. There is healing but not for me. There is peace but not for me.

† But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.
(Micah 7:7)

† And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.
(Romans 8:28)

† We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.
(2 Corinthians 1:8b-9)

† Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.
(Psalm 23:4b)

I will praise You in this chaos.
I will praise You in this chaos.
I will praise You in this chaos.

I will praise You in this chaos.
I will praise You in this chaos.
I will praise You in this chaos.

I will praise You in this chaos.
I will praise You in this chaos.
I will praise You in this chaos.
